Sticking my neck out

My top ten favourite novels

One of the great pleasures of writing your own book review blog is that you can be as selfish, intransigent, wilful, contrary and infuriating as you like – especially in your choice of writers and their work.  Starting as I mean to go on, here are my top ten favourite novels of all time. The idea is that I’ll publish reviews of each over the coming weeks.

  1. Ubik, Philip K Dick
  2. The Intuitionist, Colson Whitehead
  3. That Hideous Strength, C S Lewis
  4. Great Expectations, Charles Dickens
  5. Fata Morgana, William Kotzwinkle
  6. Nightmare Alley, William Lindsay Gresham
  7. Illuminatus!, Robert Shea and Robert Anton Wilson
  8. Pride and Prejudice, Jane Austen
  9. The book of illusions, Paul Auster
  10. Nineteen Eighty Four, George Orwell
